The Marine Corps is reinforcing its identity as an amphibious force in readiness by increasing the rigor of its water survival training and swim qualification standards. These updates are designed to improve amphibious readiness, expand operational capability in maritime environments, and build Marines’ confidence in the water across the Fleet Marine Force (FMF).

Stronger Water Survival Requirements for Marines

Under the updated Marine Corps Water Survival Program (MCWSP), Marines will be required to:

  • Stay afloat for longer periods.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in multiple swimming strokes.
  • Meet more demanding qualification standards.

All Marines must pass a basic water survival qualification during recruit training, which evaluates essential floating and swimming skills used in emergency situations. Many Marines are also required to requalify annually—often under more challenging conditions—and the new standards further elevate those expectations.

Sustained Training Maintains Readiness

While water survival skills begin at boot camp, the updated guidance emphasizes continuous training and recurring qualification opportunities throughout a Marine’s career. This ensures Marines maintain readiness for real-world maritime operations.

Water survival qualification levels are now standardized into five tiers:

  • Basic (recruit training only)
  • Novice
  • Competent
  • Proficient
  • Advanced

Each level builds on the last, introducing increasingly demanding requirements. Training incorporates four key swimming strokes—the elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and crawl stroke—chosen for their effectiveness in conserving energy and maintaining control in the water.

Introducing the Swim Survival Skills Training (S3T) Program

Warrior Athlete Readiness and Resilience (WARR)-Semper Fit Aquatics, in partnership with the Marine Corps’ lead Water Survival School, has launched the Swim Survival Skills Training (S3T) Program—a Marine-centric swimming curriculum designed to support the updated standards.

The S3T program provides a structured progression of training that:

  • Builds foundational water survival skills.
  • Advances to complex survival techniques.
  • Reinforces key MCWSP tasks, such as blouse and trouser inflation.
  • Improves performance on swim qualifications.
  • Helps reduce accidental drowning incidents.

By combining technical instruction with practical application, S3T enhances both individual performance and overall unit readiness.

Get Started with S3T Training

Marines interested in improving their water survival skills can contact their local WARR- Semper Fit team to schedule an S3T class for their unit or arrange individual instruction with a certified S3T coach.
